Dr. Michael Hartmann

Dr. Michael Hartmann is a jointly appointed Professor of Medicine and Management at McMaster University where he serves as Co-Director of the Health Leadership Academy, and Academic Principal of The Directors College – Canada’s founding professional development program for board directors (2023-2024). He is also the founding Director of an EMBA program in Digital Transformation teaching courses on Corporate Innovation, Digital Entrepreneurship and Business Modelling.

Dr. Hartmann has held senior leadership roles with universities in the UK and Canada. He previously served as Associate Vice-President, Deputy Dean and CXO, University of Manchester (2007-2012), and Assistant Dean, University of Toronto, Rotman School of Management where he helped establish a globally ranked executive education business (Top 20 Business Week and Top 50 Financial Times). He is also the Founder and Principal of the educational consultancy, The Leadership Portfolio. Dr. Hartmann has over 25 years of academic experience as a keynote speaker, educator and learning consultant to organizations in Asia, Europe, the UAE, and the Americas. A sample of his most recent client engagements includes work for the National Health Service, British Sky Broadcasting, JCB Ltd., Manchester Airport Group (UK), Novartis (Switzerland), Ziraat Bank (Turkey), Thales Group (France), NBCUniversal (USA), Omantel (Oman), Al-Futtaim Group (Dubai), Dentsu Aegis Network (Singapore, New York, London), BDO, IIA, SOCAN, OMERS (Canada), NU University (China), AECL (South Korea). He has also facilitated workshops, forums, and webinars on a wide range of corporate governance and leadership topics and hosts a regular podcast series called the “Collaboratorium.”

Dr. Hartmann holds graduate degrees from the University of Toronto (MA) and York University (MBA) and a PhD from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. He is a member of the advisory board of Stanford’s Digital Cities and Global Projects Centre, the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Technology, Governance, and Innovation Panel, and the UK-based design consultancy, Treehouse Innovations. His work on corporate governance, leadership and innovation has been published in academic journals as well as the professional press.
